Lineage | 42 Playback trials were conducted at night in the breeding colony. A trial consisted of playing recordings from different H. castro populations in turn. Birds in flight over the colony respond to the recordings by circling around the playback apparatus and calling. The level of response, which is taken as an index of vocal recognition that integrates both the number of calling individuals and their call rate, was assessed from the number of flight calls counted during a two minute period. A control recording, of a nocturnal vocalisation of a sympatric but unrelated species was also presented. The order of presentation of recordings was varied among trials and a “recovery period” of one minute was allowed between the presentation of successive playback recordings. 14 Trials were conducted in July 2009, November 2012, June 2013, and July 2014. The raw data is held with St Helena Government (SHG), processed and analysed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) project partners. |
