Temperature logger trial of incubating Band-rumped storm petrels (Hydrobates castro) using artificial nest chambers at Egg Island, St Helena, May 2014

Ibutton temperature loggers were trialled to identify incubation patterns in breeding Band-rumped storm petrels (Hydrobates castro) using artificial nest chambers on Egg Island, a small offshore island off St Helena's coastline. Five loggers were used over eight days, recording the temperature every 300 seconds. Positioning in the nest proved pivotal to success.

Lineage Four iButton temperature loggers were positioned in the nest scrape directly under the egg of incubating Band-rumped storm petrels (Hydrobates castro) in artificial nest chambers on Egg Island. Each artificial nest chamber was in a different location on the island to test for differences in thermoregulation between sites. One control Ibutton was positioned in the bread oven near the cannons to record the ambient temperature. Loggers were set to record the temperature every 300 seconds. The positioning of the logger in the scrape proved important as the incubating petrels moved around considerably in the chamber on the gravel substrate. It was therefore not possible to identify incubation changeovers between pairs. Data is held at St Helena Government (SHG).
