Tagging and Biological data for Grouper (Ephinephelus adscensionis) tagged and released fished around St Helena Island collected from March 2019 to April 2022

The dataset is an excel file which compiles data on biological sampling and tagging and recapture activities for grouper (Ephinephelus adscensionis). Tagging records catures data on: length, tag ID, latitude, longitude and depth caught, time of release and presence or absence of barotrauma. Efforts are made to biological sampling recaptured fish for: length, weight, sex, maturity, gonad weigth and other relavant recature info: latitude, longitude and depth caught. The grouper were caught from St Helena's inshore waters from March 2019 in order to characterise , growth rates, movements, seasonal reproductive patterns in the grouper ecology and establish a biomass estimate.

Lineage The grouper were caught using rod and line, the fish are brought to the surface slowly to ensure that the swim bladder does not rupture. Once on board, the fish are placed on a damp towel to protect scales. The total length of the fish is measured to the nearest centermeter rounding down. T-bar tags are inserted into the dorsal mass of the fish just below the spine. Tagging records: length, tag ID, latitude, longitude and depth caught, time of release and presence or absence of barotrauma. Tagging data is collected on the vessel by EMD staff. Biological data is either collected at the processing facility by EMD staff, the EMD lab or on the fishing vessel during observer trips. Biological sampling records: length, weight, sex, maturity, gonad weight, latitude, longitude and depth caught for grouper (Ephinephelus adscensionis). All data is entered in the database, it is checked by a different EMD staff member for quality control.
