Sound recordings of Band-rumped storm petrels Hydrobates castro colonies at St Helena

Audio recordings of known and potential new colony sites were made of the two seasonally segregated populations of band-rumped storm petrels Hydrobates castro at St Helena. Acoustic recogniser software was trialed to detect storm petrel vocalisations to identfy where storm petrels breed.

Lineage Using Wildlife Acoustic "Songmeters" and RSPB recorders 221 two hour recordings were made during the cool season (May/June) from three offshore islands (Egg Island, Thompsons Valley island and Peaked Island), during the hot season, 293 two hour recordings from five locations (Egg Island, Thompsons Valley island and Peaked Island, Gill Point, Great Stone Top) were made. SoundID software was used as an acoustic recogniser but did not reliably detect vocalisations. The raw data is held with St Helena Government (SHG) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) project partners.
