Offshore Marine Biodiversity and Habitats Assessment. 2020

This report presents the results of research carried out from research cruises, in April 2018 on board the RRS James Clark Ross (JR17-004) and in April 2019 on the RRS Discovery (DY100). The focus of these cruises was to investigate the habitats and biodiversity of the island slopes of st helena and serveral key seamounts. 6622 km2 of seabed including two previously uncharted seamounts were mapped using multibeam technology. 24 Profiles of Conductivity (salinity), Temperature and Depth were collected. 19 shelf underwater camera systems (SUCS) were collected to estimate cover of benthic habitat and Agassiz benthic trawls were used to sample benthic epifauna and infauna. Fisheries accoustics methods were used to assess density and spacial distribution of pelagic and semi-pelagic fish and microneckton.

Lineage During the two cruises to St Helena multibeam sonars, shelf underwater camera systems (SUCS), Agassiz trawls, scientific echosounds and CTDs were used to collect date presented in this report. The majority of these sampling efforts took place around St Helena and four main summit reaches the photic zone peaking at 112m deep. The cardno seamount complex is located at the northern edge of the EEZ consists of 3 main seamount connected at their bases above the abyssal know as "Cardno", the central as "Southern Cross" and the eastern summit is yet to be named and so is reffered to as "unamed" seamount. Much of the sampling took place over the photic (<200 m) and mesobenthic/mesopelagic (200-1000 m) zones, while the bathybenthis/bathypelagic (1000-3000 m) and abyssal plain (>3000 m) were less sampled.
