Nest monitoring of band-rumped storm petrels (Hydrobates castro), red-billed tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus) and masked boobies (Sula dactylatra) at St Helena

Nest monitoring was conducted on three key species; band-rumped storm petrels (Hydrobates castro), red-billed tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus) and masked boobies (Sula dactylatra). In total ~ 2099 nests were monitored for estimation of nest success and productivity between 2009-2021.

Lineage Nests were visited a minimum of once a month for estimation of nesting success and productivity. Attending adults and nest contents were recorded on each nest check. Monitoring was targeted during the peak of season (August -December) for RBTB, and throughout the season for masked booby and band-rumped storm petrel. ~480 band-rumped storm petrel (Hydrobates castro) nests in artifical nest chambers on Egg Island were monitored between 2014-2021, ~132 red-billed tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus) nests at Ladder Hill mainland St Helena and Egg Island were monitored between 2013-2018. ~1490 masked booby (Sula dactylatra) nest were monitored at Lots Wife, Sandy Bay, Mainland St Helena between 2009-2021. All nesting data is held on the Seabird Monitoring database at St Helena Government (SHG).
